Built for the businesses that actually get audited
SumPOS started with an uncomfortable observation: most point of sale software treats tax compliance as a regional plug-in and the network as a given. In Europe neither assumption survives contact with reality.
Europe is not one market. It is roughly thirty tax regimes moving to mandatory structured e-invoicing on roughly thirty different timetables, in at least six different formats, running until 2035. Belgium went live in January 2026. Poland follows in February and April. France in September. Spain and Germany are phasing in around them. A retailer with sites in three countries is not managing one compliance project - they are managing three, forever.
The United States has the opposite problem and it is no easier: no national mandate, but thousands of overlapping sales tax jurisdictions, economic nexus rules that change when you cross an invisible revenue line, and PCI obligations that tighten every year.
Most point of sale products handle one of these well and treat the rest as somebody else’s job - a partner integration, a middleware licence, a spreadsheet a bookkeeper maintains. Meanwhile the same products assume a stable internet connection, charge per user until you start sharing logins, lock you into a payment processor, and price a second location as though it were a second business.
So we are building the version that fits. One system covering the counter, the stockroom, the kitchen and the ledger. Offline-first, because a government clearance server or a broadband line going down should never stop you trading. One document engine covering every mandate you fall under. And a free core, because a shop should be able to prove the software works before it pays for anything.
We are early, we ship quickly, and we do it alongside a small number of businesses who are honest with us about what is broken. If that sounds like a reasonable trade, we would like to talk to you.
Six things we have decided not to compromise on
These are the arguments we have already had internally, settled, and written down so we do not have them again.
Offline is the default, not the fallback
Broadband gets cut, routers die, and clearance servers go down at the worst hour. If software only works when conditions are good, it does not work.
No surprises in the pricing
No per-user fees, no percentage of your sales, no module you discover is extra after you have already migrated. The number on the pricing page is the number.
Your data is yours to take
Export everything, in a documented format, whenever you want. Software that keeps you by making leaving painful is not a product, it is a trap.
Built with shopkeepers, not for a persona
Every workflow in SumPOS has been argued about with someone who actually stands behind a counter. When they tell us a screen is wrong, we change the screen.
Compliance without drama
One document engine for every mandate you trade under, tested and queue-safe. Reading a tax authority's technical bulletin is our job, not yours.
Fast is a feature
A second of latency at the till is a queue at the door. Performance is not something we optimise later - it is a constraint we design against from the start.
